Abstract
The prolongation of the human lifespan and the subsequent increase in population means that late-life depression is
increasingly becoming a major health issue worldwide. In Korea, the prevalence of major depressive disorders (MDDs) was relatively higher than those of Western countries and other Eastern countries (4.6-7.5%). This study found that occupational activities among the elderly had a protective effect against depression. Thus, the need to focus on ¡°active ageing¡± is both timely and imperative. In this study, survey logistic regression analysis was applied to the Korean Community Health Survey 2017 to examine the effects of occupational activities on depression among the Korean population aged 50 and over. The results showed that occupational activities had a significant protective effect against depression, after adjusting for confounding variables. The odds ratio for occupational activities was significantly lower in both genders, which was 0.35 (95%CI 0.29-0.43) in males and 0.52 (95%CI 0.46-0.59) in females. The results of this study showed that encouraging occupational activities is needed to promote mental health among Koreans aged 50 and over. Social, legislative, institutional, administrative and systemic support may be needed to promote occupational activities among Koreans over 50 years of age.
